If you've recently begun to snore, then there are probably one or more reasons why--reasons that affect more than just the quality of your sleep. Snoring can often be a symptom of another problem that once solved can make sleepless nights a thing of the past.
Nasal or Sinus Problems
Snoring is often associated with nasal or sinus problems, such as congestion or inflammation caused by a cold, allergies or sinusitis. Addressing these problems can lessen or eliminate snoring.
If you have packed on the pounds, then your waistline is not the only thing that's suffering. Weight gain can result in snoring. Losing those extra pounds improves your appearance, your health and the quality of your sleep.
Eating Shortly Before Bedtime
If you are eating close to bedtime, then weight gain isn't your only concern. Eating large meals shortly before going to sleep makes you more prone to snoring. If you must eat close to bedtime, try a light snack instead of a heavy meal.
Using Alcohol and/or Sedatives
As eating a heavy meal before bedtime, ingesting alcohol before turning in for the night can also result in snoring. Snoring also can result from the use of sedatives such as those found in sleep aids, antihistamines and narcotic medications.
Sleeping on Your Back
The way you sleep can also make you more likely to snore. Sleeping on your side or your stomach prevents your tongue from obstructing your airway as you sleep. To prevent falling asleep on your back, try sewing a tennis ball into the back of a shirt to discourage getting comfortable on your back.
