There are different ways to approach the golf swing. Some, for example, look at the swing and see the body rotating around a fairly stable center axis -- the golfer's spine. The rotation is generated by your hips and shoulders, which turn away from the target on the backswing, then toward the target during the downswing. Without proper shoulder and hip rotation you'll not only lose power, but also you're far less likely to hit the ball squarely and produce an accurate shot.
Backswing Hip Rotation
Pictured from above, your hips rotate clockwise on the backswing, or counterclockwise if you're left-handed. This hip rotation helps you take the club back while you're transferring some weight to your back foot. It's important that your hips rotate, however, rather than moving straight back. In his book вЂњMy 55 Ways to Lower Your Golf Score,вЂќ Jack Nicklaus suggests focusing on just one hip, to give you an easier mental picture. During the backswing, concentrate on turning your back hip away from the ball. Another way to avoid swaying your hips is to focus on transferring your weight to the inside of your back foot. If you have trouble completing a good hip turn, close your stance at bit at address by moving your back foot backward several inches.
Backswing Shoulder Rotation
Your shoulders should turn about 90 degrees during the backswing. At the top of your backswing, your lead shoulder should be approximately where your rear shoulder was at address, as a result of proper hip and shoulder turns. Additionally, your back should be turned toward the target and your left shoulder should be under your chin when you begin the downswing. Downswing Hip Rotation
Your hips rotate in the opposite direction during the downswing, clearing your body out of the swing path, and helping to transfer weight to your front foot. If you follow Nicklaus' one-hip mental strategy, focus on turning your rear hip toward the ball on the downswing. As in the backswing, it's important to avoid shifting your hips laterally, in this case toward the target. If your body is square to the target line on your follow-through, then you've rotated your hips completely. If you have difficultly with the downswing hip turn, angle your front foot more toward the target at address.
Downswing Shoulder Rotation
Don't rush your downswing shoulder rotation. Let your hips begin rotating first. In his book вЂњHow I Play Golf,вЂќ Tiger Woods says he lets his arms drop naturally at the start of the downswing, keeping them in front of his body.Begin your shoulder rotation when your hands have dropped to about waist height. At impact, an imaginary line running between your shoulders should be parallel with the target line, even though a line running between your hips should point to the left of the target -- or to the right, for a left-handed player.
